Ioannis Kourtis

BIOGRAPHY:

Ioannis Kourtis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1973. In 1982, at the age of 9, he initiated classical guitar lessons at the Delidimous School of Music, and was to stay there for another ten years. From 1985, he expanded into violin lessons and the following year also music theory, fugue and composition.

After graduating in 1992, he was accepted at the Ionian University at Corfou. As part of the music department, he was allowed the opportunity to write for various ensembles (Trio Koryfo, Ionian University Choir etc.).

1994 was a particularly busy year for Kourtis. Firstly, he switched roles and - while continuing his studies -  became teacher of classical guitar and harmony at the Filiates Municipal School, Greece. He was also accepted as second violinist in the Municipal Orchestra of Corfou. Additionally, he was approached to score various TV and radio commercials, which in turn led to his first movie score assignment - for the Greek animation film THE THREE LITTLE PIGS (1994).

Over the next two years, he would compose the music for two Greek documentaries - SEFERIS (1995) and RITSOS (1996).

After returning to full-time studies and graduating with a Master in Music Composition from the Ionian University in 2000, he became finalist of The International Film Composer Competition in Luneville, where he also was fortunate enough to meet respected A composers Vladimir Cosma and the late Michael Kamen.

In 2001, he went international and did the score for a French film called LES BARGES.

Kourtis partcipated in the jury of the International Festival of Cinema and Technology that was held in Paris, 2002, and is currently a  member of UCMF (Union of Film Music Composers).
