Peter Vermeersch

BIOGRAPHY:

Peter Vermeersch, born September 25, 1959, studied architecture, plays clarinet and tenor saxophone and is nowadays composing, producing and playing music full-time. In the past, Vermeersch worked with Thierry De Mey on the music for Rosas Danst Rosas (choreography Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker), an experience which led to the creation of the group Maximalist!. In 1988 he composed the music for the Wim Vandekeybus performances What the Body Does Not Remember and The Weight of A Hand (both in collaboration with Thierry De Mey). In 1991, again for Vandekeybus, he composed "Immer Das Selbe Gelogen", in '93 for Her Body Doesn't Fit Her Soul, in '94 for Mountains Made Of Barking (with George van Dam and Charo Calvo) and in '96 for Bereft Of A Blissful Union (with George van Dam).

Vermeersch' compositional work has also been an important factor in performances by Josse De Pauw (e.g. Weg and Larf), Zuidpooltheater, Theater Antigoon, Nieuwpoorttheater (Trage Kogels), Radeis, Dito Dito, Charlie Degotte, Willy Thomas, Jos Besprosvany, De Roovers (Leonce & Lena), Walpurgis and others.

On a purely musical scale he was a founding member and one of the main composers of Maximalist!, wrote pieces for the Arditti Quartet, Quadro Quartet, the Smith Quartet and Ensemble Musique Nouvelle, and played with Union, Fred Frith, Jazzwork from Berlin, De Simpletones. In April '95 he composed an orchestral suite for a Frank Zappa memorial with the Belgian National Radio Orchestra at deSingel, Antwerp. Peter composed a one-hour piece Music Hall for the Flemish ensemble Prima La Musica, based on the poems by Paul Van Ostayen. Later this year he will be working on a composition for the Spiegel String Quartet. His band X-Legged Sally has already a cultstatus. In 1997 Peter decided to split-up X-Legged Sally in order to create a new sound and a different vibe with A Group and Flat Earth Society. A Group's first CD appeared in January 1998, produced by long-time Zappa-engineer Spencer Chrislu. Early 1999 A Group made a second album: Volume 3. Due to the large amount of projects of each member of A Group, they decided to stop live-performances and will record more albums on an ad hoc basis in the future. Flat Earth Society is Peter's 18-musicians large big band, with which he will be touring around Europe in November and December 2001. In 2002 FES is House Orchestra for Bruges 2002. Peter is currently working with Tom Barman (dEUS) on the Tom's solo-project Magnus.

The Soluble Fish was his first opera project (in collaboration with Ryszard Turbiasz) that was performed in February '94. In 2003 his second opera Heliogabal will première in Germany for Gerard Mortier's Ruhr-Triënnale. The opera will be performed by the Flat Earth Society and directed by Roy Faudree (Wooster Group, Young at Heart).

Vermeersch also became an established producer - sometimes in collaboration with X-Legged Sally- and A Group-guitar player Pierre Vervloesem - for the CD's of rock bands such as dEUS, Guy Chadwick, Mad Dog Loose, Nancy, Think of One, L-Santo and others.

Finally, Peter recently finished his first soundtrack for the Dutch feature film Minoes. He recorded the soundtrack with his band Flat Earth Society. The movie is directed by Vincent Bal and premiered in movie theatres in Europe on December 5, 2001.
