![]() Angelo Antonucci's first feature film tells the story of Thomas Aniello (aka Masaniello), the Italian fisherman who became leader of the revolt against Spanish rule in Naples in 1647. Of course, this brings Werba back to a territory he knows very well, the period drama. And this is very much a score in the vein of IL CONTE DE MELISSA, from the requiemish melancholy of "La Rivolta" to the folksy source music in "La Taverna". There are three major themes in this score, and typically of the composer, they are repeated in various arrangements throughout the album. In addition to the previously-mentioned "La Rivolta", there is the "Amore e Liberta" theme - reflective, but somewhat more upbeat romantic in nature. The third major theme, "Tema della folia" is a more stately, but mellow affair that is best displayed in an arrangement for guitar and orchestra in track 8. Legendary composer Francis Lai (of LOVE STORY fame) supplies the central romantic theme, "Tema d'amore", which is also available in two versions. This fits neatly into Werba's melancholic minor-mode style, but relies less on the repeated melodic patterns. Overall, this is a pleasing album that showcases Werba's sense for the romantic. The themes are presented in various different arrangements, which is interesting in itself. And the themes are strong. However, it does become a bit repetitive on occasion, such as the "Sinfonia Pastorale" track. |
